The True Cost of CPSIA Third Party Component Testing

I've telling everyone how expensive the third-party component testing required by the CPSIA is but I don't think I've sat down and actually ran the numbers. Yikes! The costs are truly frightening!

I calculated the costs based on my current Winter Collection and assuming that each component test cost between $75-$100. Not included in these costs are the cost of each test item (they are destroyed in the testing process) and the cost of shipping the items to China since that's where most of the testing facilities are located.

Materials used in Winter Collection: certified organic cotton fabric, certified organic terry cloth, certified organic cotton fleece, poly thread, velcro, cotton fabric, poly anti-pill fleece, cotton chenille

The numbers: $25325 - $29100 to test the Turtle Park Tots Winter Collection

THE BREAKDOWN:

1. Bibs: $700 (both organic and non organic)
-5 components (fabric, terry cloth, velcro, thread, fabric label)
-must be tested for both lead and phthalates (found in plastics)
-retail price of bibs = $11- $16

I currently offer 20 bibs = $14000 total cost of testing

2. Chenille Baby Blankets: $300-$400
-4 components (cotton fabric, cotton chenille, thread, fabric label)
-must be tested for lead
-retail price of blankets $38

I currently offer 8 blankets = $2400- $3200 total cost of testing

3. Organic Baby Blankets: $300-$400
-4 components (organic cotton fabric, organic cotton fleece, thread, fabric label)
-must be tested for lead
-retail price of blankets $48

I currently offer 4 blankets = $1200-$1600 total cost of testing certified organic blankets

4. Changing Pad: $375-$500
-5 components (cotton fabric, poly fleece, thread, velcro, label
-must be tested for lead
-retail price of changing pad: $21.50

I currently offer 6 changing pads = $2250 -$3000 total cost of testing changing pads

5. Organic Changing Pad: $375-$500
-5 components (organic cotton fabric, organic cotton fleece, thread, velcro, label
-must be tested for lead
-retail price of organic changing pad: $30.00

I currently offer 5 organic changing pads = $1875-$2500 total cost of testing organic changing pads

6. Burp Cloths (organic and non organic): $300-$400
-4 components (organic/nonorganic cotton fabric, organic Gerber diaper, thread, fabric label)
-must be tested for lead
-retail price of blankets $16.50-$18 (per set)

I currently offer 12 burp cloth = $3600- $4800 total cost of testing each burp cloth

Help Save Handmade Toys and Children's Products from the CPSIA

It's been an awful long while since I've blogged! These have been some crazy months...my oldest turned 4 years old....the holidays of course....business AND the CPSIA

I'm sick about the CPSIA...I love what I do! I love handcrafting items for babies! I take pride in everything I make and I would never, ever sell anything harmful to children....Yet, THIS LAW WILL PUT ME OUT OF BUSINESS if it's not amended!

I will be posting a sample consumer letter that you can send to your representative or senators...please write! please help me save this wonderful industry!

For those of you not familiar with the CPSIA (consumer product safety improvement act) it was a law passed last August that reduces levels of lead and other chemical acceptable for children's toys and other products. On face, this law rocks! It was triggered by the dangerous toys being imported from China. As a parent, I applaud the effort the Congress has made to put our children's safety first and foremost.

HOWEVER, the law also requires ALL manufactures to test ALL children's products that are intended for use by children under the age of 12 years. This may be a good idea for large companies who may import their products from China but it would put many small US and European manufacturers out of business. This is especially true of the many, many small business that specialize in handmade or custom made products. Testing as the law and the CPSC require will put a HUGE financial burden on small and handmade manufacturers! Every product and it's components must be tested....for a bib that is made of two fabrics and velcro the tests can run upwards of $600. I agree that products intended for children should be regulated but they should be regulated in a way that is efficient, effective and that doesn't lump them with products mass produced in China.

The vast majority of these products are made with lead-free and phthalate-free materials such as cotton fabrics, organic materials and wood. These companies take pride in their work. In addition, in these tough economic times, they employ artisians and support families. These are the toys and products that I have been relying on since I've lost all trust in companies like Mattel.

Manufacturers must comply with this law by February 10, 2009. This day has become the "National Bankruptcy Day!

This is personal for me, not just because I rely on these products for my boys, but because I am a small manufacturer of handmade baby blankets and bibs. My materials are organic and non organic cotton and that's it. Yet, I will be required to test EVERY style of blanket and bib I make. My handmade items are often made to order and are at times, one of a kind. There is no way I can remain in business and comply with this law as it is written. This story is being played out throughout North America.

Soon consumers will only be able to buy products from the large manufacturers that triggered this law in the first place. The independent toy makers and handcrafters of children's products have earned and kept the public's trust. They provide jobs for hundreds and quality playthings and products for thousands. Their unique businesses should be protected.

There are other unintended consequences of this law: we will not be able to donate untested children's products since after February 10, 2009 since they will be illegal to sell or distribute; thrift stores may be forced to stop reselling children's products unless the test them under CPSIA; churches and hospitals will be unable to accept donations of children's products for fear that haven't undergone the proper testing....yikes! As my baby would say: "That not good!"

My Little Leo's 1

My precious little Leo turned on July 27...I can't believe he's already a year. Oh, my dear Leo is growing up...I can still remember being in the hospital. This year has gone by so fast. It's so bittersweet! Although I'm looking forward to seeing him grow and learn and become a little boy, I am going to miss his babyhood...

We had a little party for Leo with some friends. It was really nice. Leo had a great time. He wore a custom "#1" hat and bib that I purchased from Rachel at Goldenshop (goldenshop.etsy.com). He was adorable in them. He devoured his cupcake and got it all over his bib...it was so cute.

He LOVES cupcake!

I also purchased a felt/fabric "Happy Birthday" banner from Olive Ewe Baby (oliveewebaby.etsy.com) that was beautiful (below). It was so colorful and festive. I absolutely love it! I'm going to use for all of our birthdays.
Wow...soon he'll be walking and talking...it's hard to believe. He's such a wonderful baby...I know he's going to grow into a wonderful little boy!

of a brand spanking new computerized sewing machine! Yes, I finally took the plunge and I'm so happy. I feel bad for my old one...we were together for so long that I can't take her off the desk (so I've crammed both on...kind of cramped!). At first I was really intimated....and it took a while to get used to the "automatic" nature of this one. My old one was nice because I seemed to have more control..but the new one is so much more efficient. No more dropped stitches....no more bobbin jams (at least not yet :-)). I guess I'm still in the honeymoon phase...I guess I'll enjoy it while it lasts :-)

Summer Collection 2008 -- Sneak Peak!

Turtle Park Tots' Summer Collection is finally here...or at least some of it :-) I'll be releasing the Summer Collection in waves. The first wave includes the following fabrics: Aqua Chestnut Branches (Joel Dewberry), Blue/Brown Disco Dot (Michael Miller), Star Paisley (Amy Butler), Lightning Bugs Brown/Yellow Dots (Heather Ross) and Kleo (Alexander Henry). I will continue to offer the Blue Wallflower, Blue Temple Flower and Coral Morning Glory (maybe the slate morning glory too!) fabrics from the Spring Collection.

In addition to these fabrics I also welcome custom orders...

Subsequent waves of the Summer Collection will be released as I'm finished with them. I am focusing on a few fabrics at a time....for my sanity ;-)

I'm also trying to work around my lil' Leo's non-existant nap schedule. He's 10 1/2 months old. He was doing soooo well for a while and now he refuses to sleep. I've been trying the "cry it out" method but I really think it's tougher on me :-) I'm not sure why he won't sleep...all of a sudden this week he's changed....his night time sleep is really restless and fitfull and he won't sleep during the day...feh! I'm hoping it's just a phase...we'll see. Wish me luck! :-)

Yay! The weather is finally warm...really warm. But of course it only seems really warm because it snowed/rained/hailed last week. The mercury finally reached 85 degrees and I was able to get my vegetables in. I do so love Denver but sometimes I long for California and it's long growing season. I'm going to have to baby my veggies to get them to produce between now and September.

There's so much to do in the yard that I'm having a tough time staying in my studio. We're building a sandbox for the boys in the back along my herb garden...they are going to love it. And there's a couple of really tough spots in the yard that finally need to be taken care of (finally after 5 years :-))

The weather is great for the boys as well...they've been couped up in the house since about November. They've been digging and playing in the water. It's so great to be able to take them outside when they get bored...

well, i'm off to the studio to have fun ;-) oh yea, the grass is finally green again!

The Eternal Struggle

I'm back in the studio! yay! I'm feeling very creative today and I've been able to get a lot done. I went to the gym this morning and had a great workout and I think this got my creative juices flowing again...of course it helped that my little Leo had a long nap :-)

But I have a question...Does anyone else fight with their sewing machine as much as I do?!? I have to admit that my machine (I've named Paige :-)) is over 10 years old....and I only spent$125 for it...but I'm not asking it to do much more that stitch straight, nothing fancy. I've grown attached to Paige but, sadly, I'm thinking I need to replace her. But will this really help or is this an eternal struggle?....hmm

Yikes....i seem to have lost my focus. I was working great, getting a lot done and then I went to California about a week and a half ago to attend my brother's wedding (we had a great time!! It was a beautiful wedding!) and I haven't been able to get my momentum back...what to do? Help! Please comment if you have any advise for keeping oneself motivated....

Summer Collection

wow...it's time to start my summer collection. I can't wait to get started!

My spring collection is made up of a diverse collection of fabrics...I used whatever caught my eye...or my heart ;-) As a result, most items are one or two of a kind.

For the Summer Collection I'm going to focus on a smaller number of fabrics so that I can make a larger quantity. From a business standpoint it makes sense but from a design standpoint, I'm finding it difficult to narrow the collection to five or 6 fabrics....I love fabric!!!

The Summer Collection will be made up of fabrics from Amy Butler's Midwest Modern collection, Joel Dewberry, Michael Miller/Sandi Henderson and Jennifer Paganelli.... modern florals, asian inspired and nature inspired fabrics. I will post pics of the fabrics soon. The collection will include burp cloths, bibs, changing pads, diaper keepers and minky blankets.

Who knew getting a business up and running could be so much work?!? :-)

A lot has happened in the past two months...I have a thriving business doing something I love. I have been working nonstop to design new products, increase my inventory and create an effective business structure. I've become a momma-sweatshop :-) I absolutely love it! I'm having a great time. I love creating...

Some new things:

2. I'm selling my goodies at a wonderful boutique in Denver's Highland area (4110 Tennyson) "Love Your Earth". If you're in the area you HAVE to check it out! It specializes in locally made and recycled items.
3. My baby boy, Leo, started to crawl at 8 months (He's 9 months now). He loves to move and he's a much happier baby now....but that means no more working while he's awake...he really likes to go for my iron and eat the fabric scraps on the floor. yikes!
4. Spring has finally bloomed here (although it did snow today)....it's tough to stay in the house now that it's nice out side...

some old things:
1. my 10 year old sewing machine! does anyone else spend as much time as I do fighting their sewing machine? my machine has a very strong and stubborn personality...and she doesn't always like me...so frustrating! Hopefully I be able to buy a new one soon...
2. my absolute love of fabric....does anyone else get so excited when they find a new fabric? I get chills....

Leo, the baby, isn't taking naps like he should so that momma can work. Yikes! I think he must be cutting another tooth. The oldest, Ethan, helps out as much as a 3 year old can...I can't wait until I get into a nice groove :-)

Early this month I put my own sewing on hold to make 13 dinosaur tails for Ethan's preschool class (they are studying dinosaurs). I had never made "tails" before so it was fun and challenging but a lot of work. It's all I did for 4 days....but the kids loved them and they turned out so cute.

I'm just about done photographing the initial set of baby accessories for turtleparktots.etsy.com. I'm starting small but I have tons of fabric and ideas for more designs. My first few products will be burp cloth sets and burp cloth/bib sets using moda and michael miller fabrics....but that's just the begining! I love fabrics and color so expect a lot of both :-)

Welcome to Turtle Park Tots blog!

Turtle Park Tots offers hip and whimsical accessories for momma and tot. All items are handcrafted with quality, duribility and style in mind. All designs are inspired by the needs of mom and the love of fabric. Only the highest quality fabrics and materials are used.

Turtle Park Tots was created after the birth of my second child out of a need to be creative and a frustration over the lack of stylist children's accessories. All items are designed and handmade by me.

I am a mother of two beautiful boys. I left the corporate world to watch them grow up. I've been sewing for as long as I remember and I've been making accessories for my own Turtle Park Tots since the birth of my first son in 2004.

Currently I offer burp cloths, bibs, changing pads, pacifier bags, blankets and nursing pillow covers. Diaper bags and children's clothes are coming soon (I hope :-)). I plan to upload pics soon.

The grand opening of Turtle Park Tots on etsy.com is planned for March 1st, but I hope to be selling a bit sooner. Check back for updates...
